The Scrounger’s Cheapjack Christmas Special! #19: Jack Benny pt. 3

One more Jack Benny show and then we have to get on with the rest of the world. Mill Creek also offers a 39 episode Jack Benny set if you want to pursue this further.

The Other New Year’s Episode: “New Year’s Variety Show”. tags this one as “Talent Show”, but I don't feel like fighting about it today. Original Broadcast: December 30, 1956.

Right off the top is our holiday content, as Jack goes over the presents the gang got him. Don gave him the the tie, Mary the shirt, and then he pulls up his pants to show the socks he got from Dennis Day.

They were the same size, but one shrunk in the wash.

Then, Don tells him the usher found a lost purse and Jack asks for the owner to claim it. Up the aisle comes blonde bombshell Jayne Mansfield, who is just as surprised to be there as Jack is to see her there. You see, she was walking by the theater and an usher ran out and grabbed her purse…

“I once tried the purse trick with Martha Raye. She's got a grip like a bulldog!”

They also mention Jayne’s appearance with Jack on a CBS Shower of Stars special in January, the same one which is on Mill Creek’s Best of Johnny Carson and Friends set…if you just can’t deal with the suspense.

There’s also a pseudo-calypso novelty number with Rochester and the Sportsmen Quartet, which (Reminder That This Set Only Cost $5) abruptly fades out at the point where they turn the song into a Lucky Strike cigarette commercial. Cut for rebroadcast? Or did the Surgeon General make a phone call?

From there we launch into what Jack describes as an “amateur show”, but since the first amateur is Mel Blanc again, we can take that description with a big ol’ pinch of salt.

That’s followed by the Landrews Sisters, a singing act who perform a perfectly atrocious romp through “Did You Ever See A Dream Walking?”

The one on the far right is a sister, but she can't vouch for the other two.

And finally, the act Jack proudly proclaims he picked out himself, the judo master Leon Salvador. I’m not saying another word about this one. It’s the cherry on top.

Not exactly Christmassy, but it'll definitely put you in a good mood.

Our Holiday Lesson For Today: If you want to meet stars, become a purse snatcher in Los Angeles. Don’t show your children this lesson, though. It’s imitatable.

But Don’t Take My Word For It: Dailymotion has this one in three chunks, with all the “forbidden” tobacco ads intact…but also loaded with Dailymotion’s own paid ads at awkward intervals. Nobody said the life of an Internet scrounger would be convenient.
